Extra members on Max
Your Max account is for you and the people you live with. With the Extra Member Add-On, WarnerMedia-billed subscribers can share their Max plan with a friend or family member who doesn’t live with them. A base subscription plan is required.
Things to Know
- The Extra Member Add-On is available to Max subscribers billed through WarnerMedia that are not part of the Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle. The add-on is not available to subscribers billed through third-party providers, e.g. app stores and internet, mobile, and TV providers.
- Account owners pay $7.99/month (plus applicable taxes) for the Extra Member Add-On.
- Account owners invite an extra member to share their subscription plan with them. Extra members have their own account, password, and profile.
- Extra members need to be 18 years or older and be in the same country where the subscription owner signed up for Max.
What are the extra member benefits?
With the Extra Member Add-On, the extra member can:
- Stream from anywhere that Max is available (they don't need to live with the account owner).
- Stream on any supported device (1 device at a time).
- Have their own account, password, and 1 profile.
- Enjoy the same plan features as the account owner (e.g. if the owner has the Premium plan, the extra member can enjoy 4K Ultra HD video quality on select titles).
The account owner (with the Extra Member Add-On) can transfer an existing Max profile to the extra member's account (this way the extra member can keep that profile's watch history and My List).
Get or remove the Extra Member Add-On
With the Extra Member Add-On, you can share your Max plan with a friend or family member who doesn't live with you.
The Extra Member Add-On is only available to Max subscribers billed directly through WarnerMedia (and are not Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle subscribers).
Here's how to find who bills you for Max:
- Do one of the following:
- Web: Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Phone, tablet, or computer: In Max, choose your profile and then Subscription.
- TV device: In Max, choose the Settings icon
and then Subscription.
- Find who your base plan is billed through (top of screen).
If your Max subscription is billed through WarnerMedia (and not part of a Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle), you can add the Extra Member Add-On (see steps below).
The Extra Member Add-On is not available to subscribers billed through third-party providers (e.g. app stores, Disney+, Hulu, Max Bundle subscribers, and internet, mobile, and TV providers).
Here's how to get the Extra Member Add-On:
- Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Get Add-Ons.
This option is only available if your base subscription is billed through WarnerMedia. - Add the Extra Member Add-On to your plan.
- Confirm the plan change by choosing Confirm & Pay Now.
You'll be billed each month until you remove the add-on or cancel your base plan. Your base plan and the Extra Member Add-On are billed separately and may have different billing dates.
Invite an Extra Member
You must know the email address of the person you want to share Max with. Extra members need to be 18 years or older and be in the same country where the account owner signed up for Max.
Follow these steps to invite an extra member (or, invite them later):
- Choose Invite Extra Member.
- Enter your extra member's first name and email address.
- Choose New Profile or an existing Adult profile from your account. Kids profiles can't be transferred.
- Choose Send Invite.
We'll email your extra member and invite them to share your Max subscription. - Ask your extra member to check their inbox for an email from Max (subject line: You've been invited to Max as an Extra Member).
If your extra member hasn't accepted your invitation after a few days, we'll send them a reminder. Your extra member invitation expires after 7 days. If your invitation expires, we'll email you so that you can resend the invite or invite someone else.
Note Extra members need to be in the country where the subscription owner signed up for Max.
- Go to max.com/subscription and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Remove Add-On.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the add-on.
When you remove the Extra Member Add-On, your extra member can continue streaming until the end of your current add-on billing period. Your base plan is not affected.
What happens if I cancel my Max subscription?If you cancel your Max subscription, you and your extra member will lose access to Max when your base plan expires. If you have any remaining days on your Extra Member Add-On, you'll get a prorated refund for the remaining days on your add-on.
Invite or remove an extra member
Once you have the Extra Member Add-On, you can invite an extra member:
- Go to max.com/account and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Manage Extra Members.
- Choose Send Invite.
- Enter your extra member's first name and email address.
- Choose New Profile or an existing Adult profile to transfer to the extra member (this way the extra member can keep that profile's watch history and My List).
- Choose Send Invite.
We'll email your extra member an invitation to share your Max subscription. - Ask your extra member to check their inbox for an email from Max (subject line: You've been invited to Max as an Extra Member).
- Go to max.com/account and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Manage Extra Members.
- Choose Remove Extra Member and then confirm the removal.
When you remove an extra member, they'll immediately lose access to Max and we'll email them to let them know that you're no longer sharing Max with them.
Once you remove an extra member, you can invite someone else.
Here's how to find out if your extra member has accepted your invite:
- Go to max.com/account and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Manage Extra Members.
- Here you'll find one of the following:
- Invite accepted: Your extra member's name and status.
- Invite not accepted Options to resend or cancel your invite.
- If your extra member hasn't accepted your invite, choose Resend Invite.
- Ask your extra member to check their inbox for an invitation from Max (subject line: You've been invited to Max as an Extra Member).
- When your extra member accepts the invite, we'll email you.
If your extra member hasn't accepted your invitation after a few days, we'll send them a reminder. Your extra member invitation expires after 7 days. If your invitation expires, we'll email you so that you can resend the invite or invite someone else.
- Go to max.com/account and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose Manage Extra Members.
- If your invite hasn't been accepted, choose Cancel Invite or Resend Invite.
Extra member FAQ

If you didn't get an email from Max (subject line: You’ve been invited to Max as an Extra Member), do the following:
- Search all inbox folders (including Promotions, Junk, and Spam) for an email from Max (subject line: You've been invited to Max as an Extra Member).
- Ask the account owner what email address they sent the invitation to. If the email address isn't correct, ask them to cancel the invite and send a new one.
- Check your inbox for an email from Max (subject line: You've been invited to Max as an Extra Member).
- Open this email and choose Accept Invite.
- Create a Max account with your own email and password.
- Choose Start Streaming and you're ready to watch Max.
Find the error you're getting below:
- That email address is already associated with a Max account: To create your extra member account, you need to enter an email address that isn't associated with an existing Max or HBO Max account.
- Couldn't Create Account: You need to be in the country where the subscription owner signed up for Max. If you're traveling, you'll need to wait and create your account once you’re in the country where the subscription owner signed up for Max.
- Something Went Wrong: The invite link may have expired. Ask the account owner to resend the extra member invitation.
You can subscribe to Max using your existing account. Here's how:
- Go to max.com and sign in (if needed). Can't sign in?
- Choose your profile and then Subscription.
- Choose Change Your Plan.
- Choose a plan and billing period then continue.
- Add your payment method and start your subscription.
- Choose Start Streaming and you're ready to watch Max.
With your own subscription plan, you can stream on more devices at the same time and create additional profiles. We'll let the person who shared Max with you know that you have your own subscription, so they can invite someone else.
