Create or change Max profiles

For a more personalized experience, you can create up to 5 profiles for everyone in your household. Profiles keep track of what you've watched and what you'd like to watch.

There are two types of profiles: Adult and Kids. For info about Kids profiles, go to All about Kids profiles.

Each profile has its own:

Choose a topic:

Add a profile
  1. In Max, choose your profile and then + New Profile (you may need to scroll right if you have more than 3 profiles).
  2. Select an avatar or choose Skip.
  3. Enter a name (between 1 and 14 characters).
  4. To create a Kids profile, turn on Kids Mode.
  5. Add a birthdate and gender (Adult profiles only).
  6. Choose Save.

Once saved, you can edit your profile to make changes.

Edit a profile

Choose the device you're using:

Phone or tablet
  1. Choose your profile and then Edit Profiles.
  2. Choose the profile you want to change.
    If you need to update your birthdate, contact us.
  3. Make changes to the profile and choose Done.

Note If you turn off Kids Mode, the Kids profile will change to an Adult profile and it won't have Kids profile features like Kid-Proof Exit. An Adult profile can't be changed to a Kids profile.

To change the ratings for an Adult profile, you need to edit the profile on your computer at Max.com.

Computer
  1. At max.com, choose your profile and then Edit Profiles.
  2. Choose the profile you want to change.
    If you need to update your birthdate, contact us.
  3. Make changes to the profile and choose Done.

Note If you turn off Kids Mode, the Kids profile will change to an Adult profile and it won't have Kids profile features like Kid-Proof Exit. An Adult profile can't be changed to a Kids profile.

TV device
  1. In Max, choose your profile.
  2. Choose the Edit icon pencil below the profile you want to change.
    If you need to update your birthdate, contact us.
  3. Make changes to the profile and choose Done.

Add a birthdate

If you haven’t added a birthdate to your profile, you can add it once (Adult profiles only).

If you receive an error message, it means the birthdate you entered for an Adult profile is under 18 years old.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Ask the person who subscribes to Max to choose Confirm Age and enter the account password. (The Max subscriber will also receive an email about the birthdate update.)
  • If you’re under 18, choose Switch Profiles and use a profile with Kids Mode enabled.
Delete a profile

Choose the device you're using:

Phone, tablet, or computer
  1. In Max, choose your profile and then Edit Profiles.
  2. Choose a profile.
  3. Choose Delete Profile and confirm the deletion.
    This will delete the profile and its info, such as My List and Continue Watching.
  4. Choose Done.

Can't delete a profile? You can't delete the active profile. Switch to another profile before repeating the steps above. You also can't delete your first profile (created with your account), but you can edit it.

TV device
  1. In Max, choose your profile.
  2. Choose the Edit icon pencil below a profile.
  3. Choose Delete Profile and confirm the deletion.
    This will delete the profile and its info, such as My List and Continue Watching.
  4. Choose Done.

Switch profiles

Here's how to switch to another profile:

  1. In Max, choose your profile.
  2. Choose a different profile.
  3. If prompted, choose Exit Kids Profile and enter your 4-digit Parent Code to exit the Kids profile.

If you switch to an Adult profile with a Profile PIN, you'll need to enter the 4-digit PIN.

Change the app language

You can change the language of text in the Max app.

Choose the device you're using:

Phone, tablet, or computer
  1. Choose your profile and then Edit Profiles.
  2. Choose a profile.
  3. Choose Display Language, select a language, and then choose Done.

The display language is saved with your profile and used across all devices.

TV device
  1. Choose your profile.
  2. Choose the Edit icon pencil below a profile.
  3. Choose Display Language, select a language, and then choose Done.

'Who's Watching' screen

Here's what happens when you open Max:

  • TV device: If the last profile used was a Kids profile, Max will open with this profile. If the last profile used was an Adult profile, you'll see the 'Who's Watching' screen.
  • Phone, tablet, or computer: Max always opens with the last profile used (you won't see the 'Who's Watching' screen).

You can add a Profile PIN to any Adult profile so that your children can't watch Max using that Adult profile.

Profile pictures
Custom profile pictures from HBO Max appear as a generic profile icon in Max (Max doesn't support custom profile pictures). You can choose from 350 character avatars.
