Use SharePlay to watch Max together

With SharePlay, you can watch Max together with your friends and family on Apple devices. Playback is synced with everyone you invite to the SharePlay session. You can watch any show, movie, or event that's available for all participants.

What you need

To watch together using SharePlay, everyone needs:

Mobile plan (in select countries): With the Mobile plan, SharePlay isn't available.

* Max on Apple Vision Pro is only available in Hong Kong and Singapore.

iPhone and iPad: Watch together

Here's how to start watching with friends:

  1. Open the Max app on your iPhone and find something to watch.
  2. On the content details page, tap the Share icon box with arrow pointing up and then SharePlay.
  3. Enter the contacts you want to share with, then choose Messages or FaceTime.
    If you choose Messages, contacts will get a message asking them to join SharePlay. If you choose FaceTime, contacts will get a FaceTime call.
  4. Choose Watch Now to start the SharePlay session.

Join and watch using SharePlay

When you're asked to join SharePlay:

  • FaceTime call: Choose Open and then Join SharePlay.
  • Messages conversation: Tap the show or movie title at the top of the Messages conversation and then choose Open.

The Max app opens and starts playing in sync with everyone.

To switch to your Apple TV, choose the AirPlay icon rectangle and triangle in Max.

Things to know
  • Playback controls such as Pause and Rewind are shared by everyone.
  • Volume, subtitles, and captions are unique to each viewer.
  • iPhone and iPad: iOS version 15.1 or later is needed.

Watch together on Apple TV or Apple Vision Pro*

You can also watch Max together with friends in a FaceTime call on your Apple TV. For more info:

Can I watch with people in different countries?

Yes, you can start or join SharePlay with subscribers in any country or region where Max (or HBO Max) is available.

The selection of titles varies based on your physical location. If a title isn't available for one or more SharePlay participants, you'll get a 'Content Not Available' message. If you get this message, choose a title that's available for all participants.
